All My Children

Here are Babe and her mother on All My Children. Her mother married an evil man just to protect her and help her get her son back. It all worked out in the end. And she has also kept terrible secrets for her and almost died for her.

This is the ideal.

No one has that.

If my mother was dead like my father I could like her with less sacrifice. When I spoke to her, for longer than I have ever spoken to her on the phone in my life, she said:

"There are a lot of hawks around this week. Lots of them. I remembered you really like birds."

It hung over the phone line for a moment before I could fill the approval space.

My mother knows me as an 12 year old, obsessed with birds because, I would say at the time, "they can fly their way out of here."

Well, I certainly thought that when I was a kid. Or rather, I concentrated on that because it was more possible than dealing with my parents who wished I'd go away.
Later, I learned to fly, in a way, into my own world where I was occupied with powerful thoughts: I wore a bandanna over my face because I was worried about breathing my stepfather's air and I had to race into the bathroom to have a bath immediately after school to get school contamination off me and then put on the one specific weekday green bathrobe with the pink zipper front and hood.
